Attendees also learned about Jobs to Careers, an initiative of Jobs for the Future, which supports 17 demonstration projects nationwide whereby frontline health care workers attain new skills while earning academic credit and industry-recognized credentials on the job.

About: Do Chicago’s sector-based workforce centers offer a model for reshaping the local workforce system? Re-working Workforce Development: Chicago’s Sector-Based Workforce Centers will present findings from a recent evaluation of the Chicago Sector Center Initiatives and its two sector-based workforce centers – ManufacturingWorks and ServiceWorks. Among the findings:

• Sector centers have been successful at engaging employers not previously involved in the Chicago system by paying attention to their needs beyond recruitment and job matching.
• Sector centers create a platform for addressing issues of equity and accessibility by leveraging credibility with the companies they serve to promote progressive human resource practices and improved job quality.
• Sector centers have helped Chicago achieve a more integrated, demand-driven workforce development system.

The City of Chicago developed ManufacturingWorks and ServiceWorks in 2005 by redirecting a portion of funding received from the federal Workforce Investment Act. This webinar explores the results thus far.

About: This online NNSP member meeting addresses the first-ever random-assignment study of the effectiveness of sector initiatives and how it can be used to promote and build support for them. Job Training that Works: Findings from the Sectoral Employment Impact Study, by Public/Private Ventures (P/PV), shows that well-implemented sector-focused training programs significantly improve the earnings of low-income, disadvantaged workers and job seekers. The study used a rigorous experimental design to investigate the impact of sector initiatives led by three organizations: JVS (Boston, MA), Per Scholas (Bronx, NY), and Wisconsin Regional Training Partnership / BIG STEP (Milwaukee, WI). Meeting participants learn about the profiled initiatives, hear from the study’s authors, and discuss how organizations are already using the study to promote their sector initiatives. The meeting concludes with recommendations for how NNSP can use the report to promote and build support for sector initiatives.

The webinar describes the project's work to date with 18 state teams to develop their state sector strategies, policy frameworks which support regional, industry-specific approaches to workforce needs implemented by employer-driven partnerships. It also offers a framework for developing state sector strategies and introduces a toolkit developed specifically to assist states in formulating these strategies.

The webinar also describes the Virtual Policy Academy, an opportunity for state teams to participate in a learning network to support their development of state sector strategies.

May 20, 2009 - Workforce Trends and Needs in the Energy Efficiency Sector

About: In 2009, the San Francisco Bay and Greater Silicon Valley Centers of Excellence studied eight energy efficiency occupations that are most relevant to community colleges. Employers in the 12-county Bay Area are projected to add as many as 13,000 new jobs over the next three years in this cluster of occupations. This webinar will present findings from the study related to demand and growth in eight energy efficiency occupations based on survey responses from more than 700 firms that hire energy efficiency workers. In addition, the webinar will compare employment demand with existing and planned community college programs to prepare workers for these occupations and will identify gaps in existing training. Finally, the webinar will suggest strategies community colleges and other institutions can use to respond to identified industry needs.
